CAT 2N-1372 is a Caterpillar axle retaining ring (external retaining ring/open retaining ring), which is compatible with crankshafts, camshafts, drive shafts and other parts of Cat 3406/3408 engines, D8R bulldozers, 980G loaders and other models. It is used to axially position rotating parts such as bearings, gears, and flanges to prevent the parts from moving under axial force. It is a key positioning component of the transmission system Cat® Parts. The following is structured technical and application information:

Core Technical Parameters

Item Details
Basic Attributes
Model 2N-1372, Type: Shaft Elastic Retaining Ring (External Snap Ring), Material: 65Mn Spring Steel (Quenched + Tempered, Hardness HRC42-48, Surface Oxidation Blackening Treatment, Corrosion Resistance ≥48 Hour Salt Spray), Single Weight: Approx. 0.08 kg, Applicable Temperature: -40℃ to +150℃, Installation Method: Special snap ring clamps to open and embed into the shaft groove, Suitable for axial positioning of rotating shaft systems, withstands instantaneous axial impact load ≤15 kN

Key Dimensions
Inner Diameter: 65.00 mm (Free State), Outer Diameter: 72.00 mm (Free State), Thickness: 2.00 mm (Tolerance ±0.05 mm), Opening Width: 8.00 mm (Tolerance ±0.50 mm), Suitable Shaft Groove Diameter: 68.00 mm (Tolerance ±0.10 mm), Groove Width: 2.20 mm (Tolerance + 0.10/-0.05 mm), with rounded corners R0.5 mm at both ends.
Compatible Models and Applications: Compatible with Cat 3406/3408 engine crankshaft timing gear positioning and camshaft bearing positioning; D8R bulldozer final drive output shaft bearing retaining ring; 980G loader gearbox input shaft gear retaining ring. 1-2 pieces per shaft, installed in the shaft groove to fix the axial position of the components.

Performance Parameters: Elastic recovery rate ≥95% (after 1000 loading and unloading cycles), shear strength ≥800 MPa, fatigue life ≥5 million cycles (under rated axial load), radial runout after installation ≤0.05 mm.
Structural and Performance Advantages:
Reliable Positioning: Made of 65Mn spring steel with excellent elasticity, it fits tightly against the shaft groove after installation, providing stable axial positioning force and preventing vibration and wear caused by component movement.

Corrosion-Resistant and Durable: Surface oxidation and blackening treatment enhances corrosion resistance, suitable for humid and dusty working conditions, preventing the retaining ring from rusting and causing jamming or breakage.

Efficient Installation: The standard opening design is compatible with universal snap ring pliers, making installation convenient and requiring no additional processing. It allows for quick component positioning and replacement.

High Compatibility: Strict dimensional tolerance control ensures precise matching with original shaft grooves, supporting the positioning needs of similar shaft systems in various models, offering high versatility.

Installation and Maintenance Points: Before installation, clean the shaft groove and retaining ring. Check the retaining ring for cracks and deformation. Use dedicated snap ring pliers to open the retaining ring, insert it into the shaft groove, and then release the jaws to ensure the retaining ring is completely seated at the bottom of the groove without any warping. After installation, check that the retaining ring fits snugly against the component end face (gap ≤ 0.1 mm), and that rotating components do not experience axial movement.

Every 1000 hours of maintenance: Check the retaining ring for looseness, deformation, or breakage. Replace it immediately if any of these issues are found. Also check the shaft groove for wear (if wear ≥ 0.1 mm, repair the shaft groove or replace the shaft) to prevent retaining ring failure.

Prioritize original parts. Aftermarket parts may have insufficient material elasticity or dimensional deviations, easily leading to positioning failure and component collision damage.
