CAT 5N-9017 is a Caterpillar external snap ring for shafts, used for axial positioning and fixing of parts on shafts. It is suitable for heavy-duty components such as gearboxes, hydraulic pumps, and rotary mechanisms. The following is structured technical and application information.

Core Technical Parameters

Item Details
Basic Attributes Model 5N-9017, Type: External clamping shaft elastic retaining ring (DIN 471 standard), Material: 65Mn spring steel, Surface: galvanized passivation (96-hour salt spray), Single weight: approx. 0.08 kg, Suitable temperature: -40℃ to +120℃, Elastic limit ≥1200 MPa, Shear strength ≥800 MPa, Hardness: HRC 42-48, Elongation at break ≥10%

Key Dimensions Suitable shaft diameter: 65 mm (tolerance h11), Free diameter: 63.8 mm, Groove diameter: 65.5 mm (tolerance ±0.1 mm), Groove width: 3.2 mm (tolerance ±0.1 mm), Retaining ring thickness: 2.8 mm (tolerance ±0.05 mm), Opening width: 8 mm, Chamfer: 1.0 mm, Radial wall thickness: 4.0 mm, Roundness: ≤0.05 mm

Suitable Machine Models and Locations Compatible with the output shaft of the swing motor of Cat 320GC/323GC excavators, the second shaft of the gearbox of 950M loaders, and the drive shaft of the hydraulic pump of 120M graders. One piece per shaft. Used to fix the axial position of bearings, gears, spacers, and other parts to prevent movement during operation. Suitable for speeds ≤3000 rpm.

Performance Parameters: Rated axial load ≥18 kN, ultimate axial load 25 kN, installation clearance ≤0.1 mm, repeated disassembly and assembly cycles ≤5 times. Recommended installation method: cold mounting with snap ring clamps. Suitable for groove surface roughness Ra≤1.6 μm.

Structural and Performance Advantages:
Elastic positioning design: Made of 65Mn spring steel, quenched and tempered, possessing high elasticity and toughness. After installation, it provides continuous axial preload to ensure reliable part positioning, suitable for impact load conditions.

Anti-loosening and anti-corrosion: Surface galvanized passivation treatment, salt spray resistance ≥96 hours, suitable for outdoor humid conditions of construction machinery, preventing retaining ring corrosion failure; open design facilitates installation and disassembly, suitable for on-site maintenance needs.

Precision dimensional control: Strict tolerances for groove diameter and width, compatible with standard grooves for 65 mm shaft diameters, radial runout ≤0.05 mm after installation, ensuring coaxiality of parts and reducing operating vibration and noise.

High versatility: Compatible with transmission and hydraulic components of various Cat excavators, loaders, and graders, no need for customized grooves, reducing spare parts inventory and replacement costs, suitable for various heavy-duty axial positioning scenarios.

Installation and maintenance points: Before installation, clean the shaft diameter and groove, check the groove for burrs and scratches. Use external retaining ring pliers to open the retaining ring, insert it into the groove, and release it to ensure the retaining ring is fully embedded in the groove. Check the axial clearance ≤0.1 mm, with no looseness.

Maintenance Cycle: Check the retaining ring condition every 1500 hours for deformation, corrosion, or breakage; replace the retaining ring every 3000 hours to prevent fatigue failure; do not use a hammer during installation to prevent deformation or breakage of the retaining ring.

Common Faults and Solutions: Retaining ring detachment is caused by out-of-tolerance groove dimensions or retaining ring deformation; replace the retaining ring and repair the groove. Retaining ring breakage is caused by axial load exceeding limits or material fatigue; replace the retaining ring and optimize load distribution. Part misalignment is caused by improper retaining ring installation; reinstall and check the clearance.
