The CAT 5E-8580 is a Caterpillar original bolt-action retainer (also called a retainer/circlip, radial mounting, earless type) for use in Caterpillar excavators and loaders. It is used for positioning bearing housings in the gearboxes, drive axles, hydraulic motors, and other components to secure the axial position of bearings, gears, and other parts. The following is the original data and does not include information on replacement parts.

Core Technical Parameters (Raw Data)

Item Details
Basic Attributes
Model: 5E-8580; Type: Hole-mounted elastic retaining ring (GB/T 893.1, no ear opening); Material: 65Mn spring steel (quenched hardness HRC48-52, surface anodized black); Weight: 0.045 kg; Applicable Working Conditions: Static axial positioning, low-speed rotary positioning; Working Temperature: -30℃ to +150℃; Installation Method: Snap ring clamp radially retracts into the hole groove; Protection Rating: IP44; Fitting Hole Groove Accuracy: H11

Key Dimensions
Applicable Hole Diameter: D=95 mm (Tolerance 0/+0.18 mm); Retaining Ring Outer Diameter: D1=96.2 mm (Tolerance 0/+0.22 mm); Retaining Ring Inner Diameter: d=85 mm (Tolerance 0/-0.25 mm); Thickness: t=3 mm (Tolerance 0/-0.12 mm); Opening Width: s=6 mm (Tolerance ±0.3 mm) Slot width b=3.1 mm (tolerance + 0.12/-0.06 mm), slot depth h=1.8 mm (tolerance ±0.10 mm), edge chamfer C0.5 (tolerance ±0.1 mm)

Performance Parameters: Axial load capacity F=12.5 kN (static), ultimate deformation ≤0.35 mm (after loading 15 kN), fatigue life ≥5000 cycles of loading and unloading, elastic recovery rate ≥95% (room temperature), shear strength τ=600 MPa, yield strength σs=1100 MPa, fracture strength σb=1300 MPa

Structural and Performance Advantages:

Elastic positioning structure: 65Mn spring steel provides stable radial tension, firmly fixed after being embedded in the slot, preventing axial movement of components, suitable for heavy-load vibration conditions in engineering machinery.

Ear-less opening design: Adapts to compact hole spaces, no pre-reserved ear slots required, quick loading and unloading with internal snap ring pliers, high installation efficiency, and avoids interference with surrounding parts.

Oxidation Blackening Protection: Surface oxidation blackening treatment enhances rust resistance, protecting against humid, dusty, and oily environments in construction machinery and extending the service life of the retaining ring.

Lightweight and High-Precision: Weighing only 45g, it has minimal impact on the overall weight of the equipment. Strict dimensional tolerances ensure it matches the precision of Cat original slots, with a positioning error ≤0.1 mm.

Installation and Maintenance Points (Original Data)

Installation: Clean the seat hole and slot (free of oil, burrs, and rust). Use internal snap ring pliers to shrink the retaining ring until its outer diameter is slightly smaller than the hole diameter. Insert it into the slot and release the snap ring pliers, ensuring the retaining ring is completely seated at the bottom of the slot (without skewing). After installation, check that the axial movement is ≤0.05 mm.

Maintenance: Check the retaining ring’s elasticity and slot fit every 1000 hours. If the retaining ring is deformed, cracked, or the slot wear exceeds 0.1 mm, replace it immediately. Do not strike the retaining ring with hard objects to prevent elastic failure.

Troubleshooting: Axial movement is often caused by deformation of the retaining ring or wear of the groove, requiring simultaneous replacement of the retaining ring and repair of the hole and groove; retaining ring breakage is often caused by excessive shrinkage during installation (maximum shrinkage ≤ 9 mm), requiring control of the snap ring clamp stroke during installation.
