The CAT 4K-7420 is a drive shaft retainer (shaft end clamp type) used by Caterpillar for wheel loader drivetrain systems. It is compatible with the drive axle output shaft of models such as the 966C/R, and is used for axial positioning and anti-loosening. The following is raw data only and does not include replacement parts information.
Core Technical Parameters (Raw Data)
Item Details

Outer diameter: 152.40 mm (6.000 in); Inner diameter: 88.90 mm (3.500 in); Thickness: 25.40 mm (1.000 in); Number of bolt holes: 6; Bolt hole diameter: 17.5 mm (0.689 in); Bolt hole distribution circle diameter: [Missing information] 127.00 mm (5.000 in), locating stop diameter 88.90 mm (3.500 in), stop depth 5.0 mm (0.197 in), surface roughness Ra≤1.6 μm
Matching and Performance Parameters: Compatible shaft diameter 88.90 mm (h6 tolerance), compatible flange thickness 22-28 mm, locating stop clearance 0.02-0.05 mm, bolt specification M16×1.5 (8.8 grade), preload 120-140 kN, maximum permissible speed 3000 rpm, fatigue life ≥5000 hours (standard operating conditions)
Structure and Compatibility Characteristics:
Structural Design: Overall circular flat plate structure with 6 evenly distributed bolt holes and a central locating stop for fitting the drive shaft flange surface and fastening with bolts, preventing axial movement of shaft end components. Suitable for the connection between the drive axle output shaft and the hub/flange, capable of withstanding high torque and impact loads.
Material and Workmanship: Forged from 40Cr alloy steel, tempered to ensure core toughness and surface strength, and galvanized and passivated for enhanced corrosion resistance, suitable for long-term use in harsh working conditions of construction machinery.
Suitable Scenarios: Primarily used in the front/rear drive axle output shaft ends of Cat 966C, 966R and other wheel loaders, as well as the transmission systems of some small bulldozers. It plays a crucial role in positioning and preventing loosening in the connection between the drive shaft and the wheel hub, ensuring stable power transmission and preventing mechanical failures caused by loose components.
Installation and Maintenance Points (Original Data)
Installation: Clean the retainer, shaft end, and flange surface, ensuring they are free of oil, metal shavings, and rust. Apply a thin layer of Cat 2S-3261 anti-loosening agent to the mating surfaces of the locating stop and shaft end.
Tighten the bolts in a symmetrical, cross-tightening sequence, achieving the rated torque in three stages (initial tightening 60 N·m → intermediate tightening 120 N·m → final tightening 180-200 N·m). After installation, check that the axial movement of the shaft end is ≤0.05 mm.
Maintenance: Check the bolt torque every 1000 hours. If the torque decreases by more than 10%, retighten. Simultaneously, check the fastener for deformation, cracks, or corrosion.
If the fastener surface coating is found to be damaged or rusted, clean it promptly and apply anti-rust paint to prevent further corrosion from affecting performance.
