CAT 095-6009 (0956009) is a Piston Retaining Ring for the track tensioner cylinder of the Caterpillar 400GT tracked chassis. It is compatible with models such as the 349/352/374/395 excavators and the 982/988 loaders. It works in conjunction with the 095-5581 spring base, 095-5868/095-5878 retainer, and 095-5456 inner retaining ring. Its core function is to axially lock the tensioner cylinder piston, preventing piston disengagement under high-pressure conditions, ensuring the sealing and pressure stability of the tensioning system. It is a key anti-disengagement component of the track tensioner cylinder (Cat® Parts).

Item Details
Part Model CAT 095-6009 (0956009) Piston Retaining Ring
Type External snap-fit elastic retaining ring for track tensioner cylinder piston, compatible with 400GT track tensioner cylinder, and matches with 095-5581 spring base and 095-5868/095-5878 retainer
Material 65Mn spring steel, integral quenching + tempering (hardness HRC42-48), surface oxidation blackening/galvanized passivation, excellent elasticity and wear resistance, resistant to hydraulic oil corrosion
Key Dimensions Free diameter approx. 125-135mm, groove diameter approx. 120-130mm, thickness approx. 3-5mm, compatible piston groove width 3.2-3.8mm, elastic opening design for easy installation
Compatible Models CAT 349, 352, 374, 395 Excavators, 982, 988 loaders, and other 400GT tracked chassis equipment.
Functional Positioning: Embedded in the piston groove of the tension cylinder, axially locks the piston, preventing it from dislodging from the cylinder under high pressure, ensuring cylinder sealing and pressure stability, and working with the retainer/base to protect the tension spring assembly.
Adaptation and Application:
Adaptation Location: Installed in the outer groove of the track tension cylinder piston, working with the 095-5868/095-5878 retainer and 095-5456 inner retaining ring to lock the piston’s axial position. It also works with cylinder seals (such as the 095-1689 O-ring) to prevent hydraulic oil leakage and ensure stable transmission of tension force.
Application Scenarios: Heavy-duty conditions such as mining and infrastructure construction, where it withstands the impact of high-pressure hydraulic oil and the reciprocating load of the piston, preventing piston displacement that could lead to tension failure, excessively loose/tight tracks, and track deviation.
Core Functions: Axial anti-loosening locking, auxiliary sealing positioning, absorbs piston impact load, protects the cylinder barrel and seals, and extends the life of the tensioning system.
Installation and Maintenance Points
Installation: Use dedicated snap ring pliers to insert the snap ring into the piston groove, ensuring a complete and secure fit; the coaxiality error with the 095-5868/095-5878 retainer and the 095-5456 inner retaining ring should be ≤0.2mm to avoid uneven wear.
Maintenance Cycle: Check the retaining ring elasticity, opening clearance, and groove wear every 500 hours. For harsh working conditions such as mining, this period should be shortened to 200 hours.
Replacement Standard: The retaining ring must be replaced when it is deformed, broken, has diminished elasticity, or the groove clearance is >0.5mm. Original parts are preferred; non-original parts are prone to piston dislodgement and cylinder damage due to insufficient elasticity.
