CAT 095-5456 (0955456) is an internal retaining ring for Caterpillar tracked undercarriages. It is compatible with 400GT undercarriage equipment such as the 349/352/374/395 excavators and 982/988 loaders. Installed in the spring base slot of the track tensioning mechanism, it axially positions the tensioning spring assembly, prevents component movement, and ensures stable operation of the track tensioning system (Cat® Parts).

Item Details
Part Model CAT 095-5456 (0955456) Internal Retaining Ring

Type: Hole-type elastic retaining ring, C-shaped opening structure, suitable for the inner hole groove of the spring base of the 400GT track tensioning mechanism, compatible with 095-4213/095-4216 spring base, 095-5341/095-5342 retainer

Material: 65Mn spring steel, integral quenching + tempering (hardness HRC42-48), surface oxidation blackening/zinc passivation, high elasticity, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, suitable for heavy-duty impact conditions

Key Dimensions: Free diameter approx. 120-130mm, groove width approx. 3.0-3.5mm, groove diameter approx. 115-125mm, radial wall thickness approx. 5-6mm, opening gap approx. 8-10mm, suitable for spring base inner hole grooves of corresponding specifications.

Compatible Models: CAT 349, 352, 374, 395 excavators, 982, 988 loaders, and other 400GT tracked chassis equipment.

Functional Positioning: Installed in the machined groove within the inner hole of the spring base, it elastically rebounds and locks, axially positioning the tension spring and retainer to prevent axial movement of components, transmit tension force, and ensure stable operation of the tensioning mechanism. Cat® Parts

Adaptation and Application:
Adaptation Location: Inner hole groove of the spring base in the track tensioning mechanism, located between the retainer (095-5341/095-5342) and the spring. Axial positioning is achieved by elastically locking into the groove, limiting the axial displacement of the spring and retainer, and transmitting tension force with the retainer. Cat® Parts

Application Scenarios: Heavy-duty working conditions such as mining and infrastructure construction, bearing the impact and vibration of track movement, preventing spring assembly movement that could lead to tension failure, avoiding abnormal wear of chain links and track rollers due to excessively loose/tight tracks, and ensuring the stability of the track system (Cat® Parts).

Core Functions: Axial positioning, anti-movement, tension transmission, working with the retainer to lock the spring assembly, cushioning impacts, protecting chassis components, and extending the life of the track system (Cat® Parts).

Installation and Maintenance Points:

Installation: Use special retainer pliers to pry open the retainer ring and insert it into the spring base groove, ensuring it is fully embedded in the groove and springs back to its optimal position; check the fit with the retainer/spring, ensuring there is no looseness or gap.

Maintenance Cycle: Check for retainer ring deformation, breakage, and groove fit every 500 hours; for harsh working conditions such as mining, this is shortened to 200 hours (Cat® Parts).

Replacement criteria: Replacement is necessary if deformation, breakage, loss of elasticity, or inability to lock into the slot occurs. Original parts should be preferred to avoid positioning failure or part detachment due to size/elasticity mismatch.
