CAT 138-1839 is a Caterpillar axle retaining ring seal (also known as an oil seal retaining ring/sealing pressure ring), mainly used to fix the rear axle hub oil seal and the gearbox output shaft oil seal, preventing axial movement of the seal and grease leakage. It is compatible with Cat 950G/962G loaders, 777D mining trucks and other models, and is a key sealing and fixing component of the transmission and running gear system. The following is structured technical and application information:
Core Technical Parameters
Item Details
Basic Attributes
Model 138-1839, Type: Shaft retaining ring seal (metal retaining ring + sealing structure), Material: Q235 carbon steel (zinc-plated and passivated surface, corrosion resistance ≥96 hours salt spray), Sealing lip: Nitrile rubber (NBR, hardness 70±5 Shore A), Single weight: approx. 0.85 kg, Applicable temperature: -30℃ to +100℃, Sealing medium: mineral oil / gear oil, Sealing pressure: ≤0.3 MPa
Key Dimensions
Inner diameter: 120.00 mm (tolerance 0/+0.05 mm), Outer diameter: 150.00 mm (tolerance 0/-0.08 mm), Thickness: 12.00 mm (tolerance ±0.10 mm), Sealing lip inner diameter: 120.00 mm (interference 0.2-0.3 mm), Retaining ring groove width: 5.00 mm (tolerance…) ±0.05 mm), groove bottom diameter 148.00 mm, 6 bolt holes (evenly distributed φ10 mm, center circle diameter 135.00 mm), chamfer C1×45°
Compatible Models and Applications: Compatible with Cat 950G and 962G loader rear axle wheel hub oil seals and gearbox output shafts, 777D mining truck drive axle wheel hubs, 1 piece per axle, installed on the outside of the oil seal, fixing the oil seal and assisting in sealing, preventing grease leakage and dust intrusion.
Performance Parameters: Axial load ≥5 kN, radial runout ≤0.05 mm, sealing lip tensile strength ≥18 MPa, elongation at break ≥300%, compression set ≤20% (70℃×24h), oil resistance (IRM 903 oil, 100℃×70h): volume change ≤+10%
Structural and Performance Advantages: Dual-function integration: metal retaining ring provides axial positioning to prevent oil seal displacement under vibration conditions; NBR The sealing lip fits tightly against the shaft surface, forming an auxiliary seal and improving dust and leakage prevention, making it suitable for heavy-duty vibration environments.
Corrosion-resistant design: The carbon steel base material undergoes galvanizing and passivation treatment, making it suitable for humid and dusty conditions such as mining and infrastructure construction. This prevents seal failure caused by rust on the retaining ring, extending its service life by 50% compared to ordinary retaining rings.
Standardized installation: Six evenly distributed bolt holes match the original factory mounting positions, ensuring coaxiality ≤0.05 mm after installation. No additional machining is required, and it can be quickly replaced during maintenance, ensuring efficient equipment repair.
Installation and maintenance points: Before installation, clean the shaft surface and retaining ring groove, checking for deformation of the retaining ring and damage to the sealing lip. During installation, the sealing lip should face the oil seal side. The bolt torque should be 80-100 N·m, ensuring the retaining ring fits snugly against the oil seal end face (gap ≤0.1 mm). Do not strike, as this may deform the retaining ring or damage the sealing lip.
During maintenance every 1500 hours, check for: loose retaining rings, aged/damaged sealing lips, and grease leaks. Replace immediately if any abnormalities are found. After installation, check the wheel hub temperature (normally ≤80℃) to prevent overheating and seal failure.
Prioritize genuine parts. Aftermarket parts may have dimensional deviations or inferior materials, easily causing oil seal displacement, grease leakage, and bearing wear.
