The CAT 518-3770 (5183770) SEM is a Caterpillar Track Tension Cylinder Buffer Sleeve. It is primarily compatible with the track tensioner cylinders of CAT 320D/323D/329D excavators, SEM 816 bulldozers, and other models. The SEM is a highly adaptable and reinforced version used to absorb the hydraulic shock during track tensioning, protecting the tensioner cylinder, seals, and track pins, preventing damage to components caused by rigid impacts, and ensuring the stable operation of the track tensioning system. The following is the core information:
Core Technical Parameters
Item Details
Part Model: CAT 518-3770 (5183770) SEM Tensioner Cylinder Buffer Sleeve (with Inner Hole Buffer Groove + End Face Chamfer)
Core Material: 42CrMo alloy steel, overall quenching and tempering treatment (HB 260–290), inner hole surface hardening (HRC 50–55), outer diameter roll forming reinforcement, impact resistance + wear resistance dual design
Key Dimensions: Inner diameter 45 mm, outer diameter 60 mm, length 100 mm, wall thickness 7.5 mm, chamfers at both ends 1×45°, inner hole buffer groove width 5 mm, depth 1.5 mm, suitable for tensioner cylinder piston rod diameter 45 mm
Single Weight: Approx. 0.82 kg
Compatible Models: CAT 320D/320D2/323D/329D excavators, SEM 816 This product is used in bulldozers and 950M/966M loaders for absorbing hydraulic shocks in the track tensioning cylinder’s buffer chamber.
Core Function: Buffers hydraulic shocks during track tensioning, protecting the tensioning cylinder seals, piston, and cylinder barrel; reduces rigid collisions between track pins and track shoes; and extends the lifespan of tensioning system components.
Core Functions and Structural Features:
Impact-resistant Material Design: 42CrMo alloy steel, after tempering, possesses high toughness and strength. Inner bore quenching enhances surface hardness, adapting to the high-frequency impact loads during track tensioning and preventing sleeve deformation and cracking.
Optimized Buffer Structure: The inner buffer groove guides the hydraulic oil backflow smoothly, reducing the impact pressure at the piston’s endpoint and minimizing leakage or damage to seals caused by instantaneous high pressure.
Strong Wear Resistance and Adaptability: Outer diameter roll forming reduces friction and wear against the cylinder wall, adapting to the reciprocating motion of the tensioning cylinder. SEM version accuracy and wear resistance upgrades make it suitable for harsh construction environments.
Precise and Stable Assembly: The straight-tube, stepless structure with chamfered ends facilitates installation. It fits tightly against the piston rod and inner wall of the tension cylinder, ensuring precise positioning, preventing loosening, and guaranteeing stable cushioning performance.
Installation and Maintenance Points
Installation Specifications: Clean the tension cylinder barrel, piston rod, and buffer sleeve, removing burrs, metal filings, and oil. Inner diameter tolerance H7 (45 mm +0.025 mm), outer diameter tolerance f7 (60 mm -0.03 mm), surface roughness Ra≤0.8 μm.
Use cold or hot assembly (heating temperature ≤120℃). After installation, check the coaxiality of the sleeve and piston rod to ≤0.05 mm to ensure smooth piston movement.
After assembly, test the tension cylinder’s cushioning effect. No abnormal impacts or leaks should be observed. Track tension should meet the machine model standard (320D excavator track sag 30–50 mm).
Maintenance Recommendations
Inspect the buffer sleeve every 500 working hours for deformation, inner bore wear >0.1 mm, surface cracks, or peeling. Replace immediately if any problems are found.
When replacing, prioritize SEM-grade or original parts to avoid buffer failure and premature damage to the tension cylinder seals caused by ordinary carbon steel sleeves.
Simultaneously inspect the tension cylinder seals, piston, and cylinder inner wall. Replace them all if necessary to ensure the overall sealing and stability of the tensioning system.
