CAT 7I-4696 is a Caterpillar original axle retaining ring (external retaining ring), suitable for axial positioning of pins/bearings in Cat D8R/D9R bulldozers, 980H loaders, etc. It is used to fix bearings/bushings in parts such as boom hinge pins and track balance shafts, preventing axial movement of components and ensuring assembly stability under heavy load conditions. The following is a professional technical and application guide:
Core Technical Parameters (Professional Version)
Item Details Basic Attributes Model 7I-4696, Type: Axle retaining ring (external retaining ring, rectangular cross-section, tempered carbon steel), Suitable for boom pins, track balance shafts, gearbox output shafts, etc. in Cat D8R/D9R bulldozers, 980H loaders, and 777D mining trucks, Material: SAE 1070 spring steel (tensile strength ≥1800 MPa, hardness HRC 47-51), Free diameter 85.5 mm (3.366 inches, tolerance +0.20/-0.10 mm), shaft diameter compatible with 80 mm (3.15 inches, tolerance 0/-0.10 mm), cross-sectional dimensions 2.5 mm × 4.0 mm (thickness × width, tolerance ±0.05 mm), unit weight approximately 0.095 kg, rated axial load ≥8 kN, operating temperature -40℃ to +120℃, surface treated with anodized blackening (salt spray resistance ≥120 hours), conforms to DIN 471 standard
Key Dimensions: Groove diameter 85.7 mm (tolerance +0.11/0 mm), groove width 4.1 mm (tolerance +0.10/0 mm), opening clearance 1.5-2.0 mm, retaining ring outer diameter ≤89.0 mm, radial runout after installation ≤0.1 mm, axial positioning accuracy ≤0.2 mm
Material and Process: Spring steel, quenched + Tempering treatment; rectangular cross-section ensures elasticity and strength; oxidized black surface for rust prevention; free from defects such as porosity and cracks; elastic opening ≥ 5 mm; springback rate after assembly ≥ 95%; repeated disassembly and reassembly cycles ≤ 5 times (to prevent elastic failure).
Compatible with Cat D8R/D9R bulldozers, 980H loaders, 777D mining trucks, and 966H/972H loaders. Core application is for axial positioning of shaft ends/bearings/bushings in heavy-duty equipment. Suitable for boom hinge pins, track balance shafts, gearbox output shafts, etc., with a shaft diameter of 80 mm, preventing axial movement of components. Suitable for impact loads ≥ 5 kN.
Assembly fit: Interference fit with shaft groove (interference 0.15-0.25 mm, elastic expansion installation). After installation, the retaining ring fits snugly against the bottom of the groove without gaps; axial movement ≤ 0.1 mm. Use snap ring pliers for installation to avoid deformation or breakage of the retaining ring.
Installation and Maintenance Points:
**Before installation, clean the surface of the retaining ring and the shaft groove.** Check the retaining ring for cracks, deformation, and peeling of the surface oxide layer. Ensure the dimensions and tolerances meet requirements. The groove should be free of burrs and impacts.
During assembly, use dedicated shaft snap ring pliers to expand the retaining ring and smoothly insert it into the shaft groove (expansion ≤ 5 mm to avoid over-expansion leading to elastic failure). After installation, check that the retaining ring is fully embedded in the groove with no protrusion. Gently push it by hand; there should be no axial movement.
Maintenance Recommendations: Check the retaining ring’s elasticity and groove wear every 1000 hours. If the retaining ring shows permanent deformation, cracks, or groove width wear > 0.2 mm, replace it immediately to prevent abnormal wear caused by axial movement of the component.
